In 1957-58 Halifax managed to finish in the top half of the table for the first time since the war. As a result they were placed in the Third Division for the following season, following the abolition of the old regional divisions. They held on to their place until 1963 when they were relegated to the Fourth Division.

Macclesfeild Town began to make an impression in the 1960s. They made three appearances in the FA Cup First Round. In 1968 they featured on Match of the Day when they were beaten by Fulham in the third round by 4-2, having led 2-1 at half time.

Having been relegated to the Fourth Division Watford made yet another change in their colours, this time to yellow, red and black but it was not until the arrival of pop star Elton John as chairman in 1977 that the club began their remarkable climb to the top. Graham Taylor was appointed manager and in 1978. The Hornets stormed to the Fourth Division title. The following season they reached the semi-finals of the League Cup and won promotion to Division Two.
